asked the Secretary of State for Trade and Industry if he will review the problems presented for the development of information technology by the bias in the Alvey programme against the funding of contracts with small companies; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Pattie

Participants in the Alvey programme are selected on their ability to contribute to the research programme, not on their size. In fact, firms of all sizes are active in the programme and so far about 20 small firms are directly involved in approved projects.
