HC Deb 21 March 1985 vol 75 cc611-2W
Mr. Dewar

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland (1) if he will list the number of people employed in the service sector in each of the last 10 years in Scotland, giving the change in each year as a percentage of the total employed in that sector;

(2) if he will list the number of people employed in the manufacturing industry in the last seven years in Scotland, giving the change in each year as a percentage of the total employed in that sector.

Mr. Younger

The estimated numbers of employees in employment in each of these sectors, as defined on the 1980 standard industrial classification, and the percentage changes from each previous year, are as follows:

Manufacturing Services
Number in thousands Percentage change Number in thousands Percentage change
1975 1,156 +2.7
1976 1,180 +2.0
1977 1,180 0.0
1978 609 -1.8 1,188 +0.7

Mr. Younger

Since public expenditure is now planned in cash, volume figures are no longer relevant and the information needed to construct them is no longer collected comprehensively. The information requested in cost terms is set out in the following table.

Manufacturing Services
Number in thousands Percentage change Number in thousands Percentage change
1979 606 -0.6 1,222 + 2.8
1980 511 -9.8 1,230 -1.0
1980 566 -6.6 1,242 + 1.7
1982 478 -6.4 1,234 +0.3
1983 447 -6.5 1,231 -0.2
1984 437 -2.2 1,254 +1.9

Note:

The estimates for 1982, 1983 and 1984 are provisional.
