Mr. Evans

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science (1) what are the latest estimates of the number of 18 and 19-year-olds in Great Britain currently who are (a) in full-time education, (b) on youth training schemes, (c) unemployed and (d) engaged in another activity; and how these figures compare with the previous year and 1979;

(2) what are the estimates of the number of 20 and 21-year-olds in Great Britain currently who are (a) in full-time education, (b) on youth training schemes, (c) unemployed and (d) engaged in another activity; and how those figures compare with the previous year and 1979;

(3) what are the estimates of the number of 22-yearolds in Great Britain currently who are (a) in full-time education, (b) on youth training schemes, (c) unemployed and (d) engaged in another activity; and how those figures compare with the previous year and 1979;

(4) what are the estimates of the number of 23 and 24-year-olds in Great Britain currently who are (a) in full-time education, (b) on youth training schemes, (c) unemployed and (d) engaged in another activity; and how those figures compare with the previous year and 1979.

* The increases for 1980 compriser two elements:the clegg commission award ranging 17 per cent for the highest paid head teachers, and an arbitral award ranging from 14.5 per cent, for those receiving from 17 per cent Clegg to 16 per cent. for those receiving 25 per cent.; giving compound increases in the range 34 to 45 per cent.
