HC Deb 07 March 1985 vol 74 c598W
Mrs. Renée Short

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services what steps he intends to take to reduce the number of deaths resulting from hypothermia.

Mr. John Patten

Death resulting from hypothermia is relatively rare: it was mentioned as a cause of death in 539 of a total of 579,608 deaths in England and Wales during 1983. We have extended entitlement to regular weekly additional help with heating costs, which now goes automatically to all supplementary pensioner householders over 65. We also encourage and support the Health Education Council's activities to make advice and guidance on all aspects of keeping warm widely available.
