§ Mrs. Renée Shortasked the Chancellor of the Exchequer what is the total per annum of taxes paid by the West Midlands region and by Wolverhampton; what sum this represents per employed person; and what is the total of Government aid received by (a) the west midlands region and (b) Wolverhampton.
§ Mr. Moore[pursuant to his reply, 28 February 1985, c. 262–3]: The estimated amounts of income tax and stamp duties on land and buildings, attributable to the west midlands region were respectively £2.5 billion and £30 million in 1982–83. It is not possible to allocate other taxes to particular regions.
The total number of people in employment in the region at mid-year 1982 was 1.9 million. During the period 1 May 1979 to 30 November 1984 a total of £145 million in industrial aid were available to the west midlands region. Similar figures are not available for Wolverhampton alone.
Some parts of the west midlands region, including Wolverhampton, have been given assisted area status, under section 7 of the Industrial Development Act, in November 1984.
