HC Deb 05 March 1985 vol 74 c466W
49. Mr. Amess

asked the Secretary of State for Employment how many long-term unemployed there are in Basildon; and what plans he has to alleviate the situation.

Mr. Alan Clark

On 10 January 1985, a total of 3,436 claimants had been unemployed for over one year in the Basildon jobcentre area. Their immediate prospects of employment can be improved by participation in one of our employment and training measures. But their longer-term prospects depend upon sustainable growth in output and jobs, which is the objective of our economic policies.
