HC Deb 04 March 1985 vol 74 cc397-8W
Mr. McTaggart

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland (1) what has been (a) the average number of unemployed in the city of Glasgow and (b) the average number of vacancies advertised in jobcentres in the city of Glasgow, in each of the last six years for which figures are available;

(2) if he will list the number of people in (a) the city of Glasgow and (b) Scotland who have been unemployed for (i) less than one year, (ii) more than one year but less than two years, (iii) more than two years but less than three years and (iv) more than three years at the latest available date; if he will list the numbers unemployed in these categories on the equivalent dates in each of the last six years; and if he will further break down the figures for the city of Glasgow into the following age groups (a) 16 to 18 years, (b) 18 to 25 years, (c) 25 to 50 years and (d) over 50 years.

Mr. Allan Stewart

I refer the hon. Member to my right hon. Friend's letter to him of 22 October. The information is available in the House of Commons Library, with the exception of the vacancies information which is available only according to the numbers notified, not advertised. Furthermore the unemployment figures are not directly comparable due to the change in the basis of the count in October 1982.

Mr. McTaggart

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland what was the total number of redundancies notified in the city of Glasgow in each of the past six years for which figures are available.

Mr. Allan Stewart

There are no comprehensive statistics on redundancies. The table shows the number of redundancies involving 10 or more workers, which were notified to the Manpower Services Commission as having occurred in the former Glasgow travel-to-work area (TTWA) during the years 1979–84. Comparable figures for the Glasgow city area could only be made available at disproportionate cost.

Redundancies Glasgow TTWA
1979 11,399
1980 17,793
1981 15,095
1982 11,512
1983 8,863
1984 *5,879
Note:
Glasgow TTWA comprised the jobcentre areas of Glasgow city, Barrhead, Clydebank, Cumbernauld, East Kilbride, Kilsyth and Kirkintilloch.
