HC Deb 04 March 1985 vol 74 c385W
Sir Raymond Gower

asked the Secretary of State for Wales what steps he will take to increase the supply of land available to house builders in Wales; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Wyn Roberts

In September 1984 the Welsh Office issued circular 47/84 "Land for Housing in Wales" reminding local authorities of their responsibility to ensure that there is an adequate supply of land available for housing. County structure plans should show how future housing requirements can best be met and the Welsh Office will be looking to see that this is achieved in the current round of structure plan reviews. The circular also advised local authorities that where the supply of land is found to be inadequate to meet the structure plan provision for housing, authorities should consider what steps to take, including expediting planning applications and allocating additional land through the preparation and adoption of local plans. The Land Authority for Wales with its powers to acquire and dispose of land for development can also play a significant role in making more housing land available.
