HC Deb 24 June 1985 vol 81 cc307-9W
Mr. Freud

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science what is the percentage change in funding to each university by the Universities Grants Committee in each year since 1981.

Mr. Brooke

The percentage change in funding to each university by the University Grants Committee in each year between the academic years 1981–82 and 1983–84 (the latest year for which complete figures are available) is given below. The figures are based on the total recurrent grants paid to universities through the University Grants Committee plus the equipment and furniture grant. They exclude other non-recurrent Exchequer grants. The figures reflect a number of funding changes including the additions made to recurrent grant to compensate for changes in the level of the home undergraduate fee, the cost of compensating staff for redundancy or early retirement and changes to take account of the increase in the value of minor capital works that can be funded from recurrent grant. The different level of local authority rates and the inclusion of the costs of staff compensation make the changes from year to year and comparisons between individual universities potentially misleading.
