HC Deb 20 June 1985 vol 81 cc218-9W
Lord James Douglas-Hamilton

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland how many dentists there are in Scotland per head of population.

Mr. John MacKay

The whole-time equivalent number of dentists per head of population in Scotland as at 30 September 1984 is 1:2,607.

Lord James Douglas-Hamilton

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland what proportion of adults in Scotland have had all their natural teeth removed or extracted.

Mr. John MacKay

The 1978 adult dental health survey concluded that in that year 39 per cent. of adults in Scotland had no natural teeth. This is the most recent information available.

Lord James Douglas-Hamilton

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland how many dental students there have been in Scotland in each of the last 20 years, per head of population; and how many student grants to dental students per head of population there were for the same dates.

Mr. John MacKay

The detail requested on the numbers of dental students, other than for the academic year 1965–66, which is not available, is shown in the table. Information on the numbers of grants to dental students is not readily available and could not be provided except at disproportionate cost.
