§ 44. Mr. John Carlisleasked the Secretary of State for the Environment if he will make a statement on the implications for the Gleneagles agreement of the declaration of intent by all sports associations in South Africa, a copy of which has been sent to him.
§ Mr. MacfarlaneWhilst the Government welcomes the principles behind the declaration of intent, it can have no implications for the Commonwealth statement on apartheid in sport. The statement, which represents the consensus view of the Commonwealth, is a reaction to the South African Government's system of apartheid, which is not affected by the declaration.
