§ Mr. Bowen Wellsasked the Attorney-General if the investigation of possible offences in respect of a diary kept by an officer of HMS Conqueror has been completed; and if he will make a statement.
296W
§ The Attorney-General:I refer to the answer which my right hon. Friend the Secretary of State for Defence gave the hon. Member for Carrick, Cumnock and Doon Valley (Mr. Foulkes) on 30 November. The Metropolitan police have submitted their report on this matter to the Director of Public Prosecutions, who has concluded that it is not possible for him to institute proceedings against any person on the evidence now available. It is also his view that there is insufficient prospect that further investigations would enable him to come to a different conclusion for it to be in the public interest for him to ask the police to pursue their inquiries any further. I agree with him in all respects.
