HL Deb 04 June 1985 vol 464 c740WA
Lord Brockway

asked Her Majesty's Government:

Whether they will make a statement on the proceedings of the conference on the United Nations Decade for Women at Nairobi, and whether they have decided to ratify the convention on equal rights for women, already ratified by the governments of 56 countries, and if not, what are their reasons for not doing so.

Baroness Young

We intend to play a constructive part in the World Conference of the United Nations Decade for Women. We hope that a useful concluding document will be produced on forward-looking strategies for the advancement of women for the period up to the year 2000, containing practical and specific ideas.

We hope to announce a decision soon on ratification of the United Nations Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women. We are still considering the provisions of this convention in the light of domestic legislation.
