HC Deb 03 June 1985 vol 80 c101W
Mr. Corbyn

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services if he will state the current number of men and women residing in the London borough of Islington who are in receipt of state retirement pensions.

Mr. Whitney

I refer the hon. Member to my reply on 22 May to the hon. Member for Newham, North-West (Mr. Banks) at column470.

Mr. Corbyn

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services if he will state the number of recipients, and the total amounts, of (a) death grant, (b) maternity allowance, (c) special diet supplement and (d) special laundry supplement, claimed in the area of north Islington during the past year.

Mr. Whitney

The area of north Islington is served by three local offices: Hoxton, Finsbury Park and Highgate. Figures are not available to show either the number of recipients of death grant, maternity allowance, and additional requirements in supplementary benefit cases for diet or laundry or the total amounts paid.

However, the number of claims for death grant and maternity allowance in the year ending 9 April 1985 were as follows:

Death Grant Maternity Allowance
Hoxton 797 790
Finsbury Park 883 1,057
Highgate 1,142 1,184
Totals 2,822 3,031

Mr. Corbyn

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services if he will state the number of unemployed young people aged 16 and 17 years currently in receipt of supplementary benefit, and the weekly total amount paid to this age group, in the area of north Islington.

Mr. Whitney

The information requested is not available.

Mr. Corbyn

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services if he will estimate how many families in Islington are eligible for family income supplement.

Mr. Whitney

I regret that this information is not available. Family income supplement claims are dealt with by one centre at Blackpool and no information is maintained about claims from particular local areas.
