§ Mr. Kennedyasked the Secretary of State for the Home Department (1) whether, pursuant to his statement of 26 March, Official Report, columns 228–29, dental students accepted before 1 April for entry in October will be allowed to stay and work when their training is complete;
(2) whether, pursuant to his statement of 26 March, Official Report, columns 228–29, overseas dental students now in training in the United Kingdom will be allowed to stay and work when their training is complete.
§ Mr. WaddingtonOverseas dental students may remain here for up to four years on completion of their studies to undergo post-graduate training in hospital. Those wishing to take salaried posts in general practice will normally require the approval of the Department of Employment or, if proposing to work as a principal, will need to qualify for admission as a self-employed person.
Under the Statement of Changes to the Immigration Rules laid before Parliament on 26 March (HC 293), only those overseas nationals who had sought or been granted permission to work in the United Kingdom as dentists on or before 1 April 1985 will continue to be allowed to take professional appointments without restriction.
