The Government hope to introduce legislation to encourage the supply of more homes for renting in the private sector, but probably not during the lifetime of this Parliament.

The 1983 general household survey shows 11 per cent. of households in England living in privately rented accommodation, including 2 per cent. in Housing Association accommodation.
