HC Deb 10 July 1985 vol 82 c475W
48. Mr. Norris

asked the Secretary of State for the Environment if he will make a statement on the Government's policy towards Britain's heritage.

Mr. Macfarlane

The Government's policy is to protect and promote the heritage for the present and future enjoyment of the British public and for the benefit of our tourist industries. We are therefore maintaining the x royal parks and palaces to a high standard and shall continue to protect structures of archaelogical, architectural or historic importance through the powers and resources given to the Historic Buildings and Monuments Commission and other agencies concerned with the built heritage and works of art. In addition, we shall ensure that the Nature Conservancy Council and the Countryside Commission are given the necessary powers and resources to conserve the habitats of our plants and animals and the most important features of Britain's natural landscape.
