Mr. Corbyn

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services who has been responsible for the cleaning of the St. Helier hospital, Merton, for each of the years 1982, 1983, 1984 and 1985.

Mr. Kenneth Clarke

Merton and Sutton health authority's own domestic staff were responsible for the cleaning of St. Helier hospital for the period from 1982 to 13 January 1985. Responsibility was then taken over by Mediclean, a specialist hospital cleaning service. The health authority anticipate that this change will produce savings of £800,000 a year which they will retain to spend on health services in the district.

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services how many complaints have been received about cleaning standards at St. Helier hospital, Merton.

Mr. Kenneth Clarke

Merton and Sutton district health authority received a total of seven written complaints about cleaning standards at St. Helier hospital in the three years 1982 to 1984. It has received six written letters of complaint and six letters of praise about the cleaning standards at St. Helier since January of this year.
