HC Deb 01 July 1985 vol 82 c70W
14. Mr. Yeo

asked the Secretary of State for Transport if he will introduce legislation requiring passenger-carrying coaches to be fitted with roll bars to protect occupants in the event of accident.

Mrs. Chalker

I am very pleased to say that, following an initiative by my Department, an international standard on coach roof strength was agreed in June by the United Nations expert group on vehicle construction. This will require roll-over bars or other measures to strenghthen the coach framework. We shall be introducing regulations as soon as we can to apply the standard to all new coaches registered in Britain.
