HC Deb 14 January 1985 vol 71 cc14-5W
Mr. Parry

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department why persons arrested under the Prevention of Terrorism (Temporary Provisions) Act over the Christmas holiday period in England and Wales have been transferred to Liverpool.

Mr. Brittan

Three people arrested in other parts of the country were taken to Liverpool for questioning in connection with an investigation being conducted by the Merseyside police.

Mr. Parry

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department how many people have been detained under the provisions of the Prevention of Terrorism (Temporary Provisions) Act over the Christmas holiday period to the latest date in England and Wales; how many persons have been charged; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Brittan

Between 24 December 1984 and 10 January 1985, 19 people were detained under the prevention of terrorism legislation in England and Wales. By 10 January, seven had been charged with criminal offences. Of these two were convicted and five were remanded in custody.

Mr. Parry

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department (1) how many persons have been arrested on Merseyside under the Prevention of Terrorism (Temporary Provisions) Act to the latest available date; how many were subsequently (a) charged and (b) convicted; and if he will make a statement;

(2) how many persons have been detained in. England and Wales under the provisions of the Prevention of Terrorism (Temporary Provisions) Act to the most recent available date; and how many were (a) charged and (b) convicted.

Mr. Brittan

The available information on detentions under the Prevention of Terrorism Acts relates to the period up to 30 September 1984 and is published in Home Office Statistical Bulletin 25/84, a copy of which is in the Library of the House. Of the 458 subsequently charged throughout Great Britain, 344 had been found guilty; I will provide figures for England and Wales and for Merseyside as soon as possible.

Mr. Parry

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department what representations he has received concerning the number of persons detained over the Christmas holiday period to date under the provisions of the Prevention of Terrorism (Temporary Provisons) Act; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Brittan

I have received a number of telephone calls and letters from hon. Members and members of the public concerning recent detentions under the Prevention of Terrorism (Temporary Provisions) Act.
