HC Deb 14 January 1985 vol 71 c15W
Mr. Alex Carlile

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department if he will call for a report from the appropriate chief constable on the circumstances in which James Magis was arrested on 28 November on his arrival at Dover and was detained until he was placed on a plane to Paris on 5 December; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Brittan

Mr. James Magis arrived at Dover on 28 November 1984 and was detained by an immigration officer for further examination under the Immigration Act 1971. Later that day he was arrested under the Prevention of Terrorism (Temporary Provisions) Act 1984 and taken to London for questioning by the police. I subsequently authorised extensions of Mr. Magis' detention of four days and then of a further day. On 5 December he was refused leave to enter the United Kingdom on my personal direction that his exclusion would be conducive to the public good. He was removed to France on the same day.
