HC Deb 14 January 1985 vol 71 cc52-3W
Mr. Peter Bruinvels

asked the Secretary of State for Transport if he will introduce legislation to ban drinking and driving.

Mrs. Chalker

The current legislation has been in force for under two years and it is sensible to give it a fair trial before considering possible changes.

Mr. Peter Bruinvels

asked the Secretary of State for Transport if he will consider initiating a campaign throughout the year to deter motorists from drinking and driving.

Mrs. Chalker

A continuous programme of major publicity would be very expensive and not necessarily effective. Although our main campaigns have taken place over Christmas and new year period, their aim has been to encourage a responsible attitude to drinking and driving at all times of the year.

I shall be considering the case for taking action over a longer period or at different times of the year as part of our continuing effort to educate people about the grave dangers of drinking and driving.
