asked the Secretary of State for Transport how much is spent on track servicing by British Rail; and what proportion of the network is serviced each year.

In 1983, British Rail spent £492 million on track maintenance. Every year, the entire rail network is surveyed by BR's engineering staff and the work is done where it judges it necessary.
