Mr. Sheerman

asked the Secretary of State for Employment what is the number and percentage of young people aged 16 and 17 years who are (a) unemployed and (i) claiming benefit and (ii) not claiming benefit; (b) on a youth training scheme, (c) in school, (d) at further education establishments, (e) in work and (f) elsewhere at the latest available date and for each of the past five years, with appropriate adjustments for the available categories in previous years.

Mr. Alan Clark

The available estimates are shown in the following table:

count in October 1982, details of the ethnic origin of unemployed are no longer available from the count. Figures by country of birth or parents' birth for unemployed registrants aged under 18 for February each year up to 1982 are available in the House of Commons Library, but not in the form of percentage rates. Some information on numbers and percentages unemployed by ethnic origin is available from the 1979, 1981 and 1983 labour force surveys but not in sufficient detail to provide figures for under 18 year age groups.
