Mr. Robert Hughes

asked the Secretary of State for the Environment what guidance Her Majesty's Government have given to the Sports Council regarding discussions and contact with Mr. E. Barlow at the South African sports office.

Mr. Macfarlane

The policy of Her Majesty's Government and the Sports Council is to support the Commonwealth statement on apartheid in sport and to discourage sporting contacts with South Africa. I have given no specific guidance regarding Mr. Barlow, but the Sports Council will act in accordance with its and the Government's policy.

asked the Secretary of State for the Environment if the Minister in his Department with special responsibility for sport has met Mr. E. Barlow, the director of the South African sports office, in London; and if he has any plans to meet Mr. Barlow.
