HC Deb 09 January 1985 vol 70 c478W
Mr. Mikardo

asked the Secretary of State for the Environment if he will give a breakdown of how many of the jobs in the enterprise zone in the Isle of Dogs have been transferred from other locations; and how many of the jobs in the enterprise zone have been newly created.

Sir George Young

The consultants who monitored economic activity in the zones reported that up to 31 May 1983 a net total of 77 firms had been established in the Isle of Dogs enterprise zone, employing 353 people. Of these, 186 were in jobs in new firms and 124 were in firms relocated from elsewhere; the origins of 20 firms, comprising 43 jobs were unknown.

The consultants also estimated that in the period 1 June to 31 December 1983 a further 451 jobs were established in the zone but I do not have any information as to what proportion of these jobs were in new firms.
