HC Deb 09 January 1985 vol 70 c499W
Mrs. Renée Short

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services what provisions will be made for printing notices and instruction leaflets in foreign languages in National Heath Service hospitals and clinics for ethnic minority community patients.

Mr. Kenneth Clarke

This is primarily a matter for individual health authorities to determine in the light of local needs, although attention was drawn to the need for hospital and clinic signs in the most commonly used community languages in "Providing Effective Health Care in a Multi-racial Society: A checklist for looking at local issues" which was distributed to health authorities by Training in Health and Race. Also the Health Education Council has produced a number of leaflets for members of the ethnic minority communities, particularly in connection with the Stop Rickets and Asian Mother and Baby Campaigns.
