HC Deb 09 January 1985 vol 70 c505W
Mrs. Ann Winterton

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services what information he has as to the total numbers of children born as a result of invitro fertilisation in other countries.

Mr. Kenneth Clarke

We understand that some 400 children have been born in other countries as a result of invitro fertilisation.

Mrs. Ann Winterton

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services if he will list all those establishments within the United Kingdom where invitro fertilisation techniques are used in the treatment of infertile couples, specifying which are National Health Service establishments.

Mr. Kenneth Clarke

I refer my hon. Friend to my reply to the hon. Member for Leeds, West (Mr. Meadowcroft) at columns465–466. We do not collect information about private sector facilities for this treatment, but I understand that at least two centres offer it — Bourn Hall clinic, Cambridgeshire and the Cromwell hospital, London.
