HC Deb 09 January 1985 vol 70 c507W
Mrs. Renée Short

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services what guidelines he intends to issue arising from the survey published by his Department on the heights and weights of adults in Great Britain.

Mr. John Patten

The findings of this survey to the effect that many people in Great Britain including young people are overweight, and that heart trouble occurs more frequently among overweight people, highlights the importance of the dietary recommendations made in the recent report on diet and cardiovascular disease by the Chief Medical Officer's committee on medical aspects of food policy (COMA). My right hon. Friend has asked the British Nutrition Foundation and the Health Education Council that their joint advisory committee on nutrition education turn the COMA advice into practical guidelines for the public as soon as possible.
