HC Deb 28 February 1985 vol 74 c221W
83. Mr. Nelson

asked the Secretary of State for Employment what consultations he is arranging between local authorities, the Health and Safety Executive and fairground operators about measures to improve the safety of fairground equipment.

Mr. Peter Bottomley

Consultation with the fairground industry on measures to improve the safety of fairground equipment takes place at the joint advisory committee for health and safety in the amusement industry. Membership of this committee consists of representatives from the Health and Safety Executive national industry group and the three main organisations which represent fairground operators.

The work of the committee has led to the joint initiative of the publication in 1984 of the code of safe practice at fairs and there are indications that this has already led to improved standards. A sub-committee of the advisory committee is considering how the code's objectives can be translated into improvements at particular devices. The executive has published advice on improvements at popular fairground rides, and a programme of further guidance notes has been drawn up.
