asked the Secretary of State for Trade and Industry if he will make a statement on developments in the balance of trade in manufactured goods.

Mr. Norman Lamont

Trade in manufactured goods, on a balance of payments basis, was in deficit in 1984 by £3.8 billion. At the same time, however, the current account as a whole was broadly in balance.

66. Mr. Teddy Taylor

asked the Secretary of State for Trade and Industry what was the United Kingdom's surplus or deficit in manufacturing trade with the European Economic Community and the rest of the world, respectively, in 1984 on the overseas trade statistics basis.

Mr. Norman Lamont

In 1984 there was a crude deficit on trade in manufactures with the European Community of £8.4 billion, and a crude surplus of £2.2 billion with the rest of the world. On theOverseas Trade Statistics basis, on which these balances are derived, the valuation of imports includes freight and insurance costs.
