HC Deb 26 February 1985 vol 74 c106W
Mr. Hordern

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science if he will publish the cost of the salaries of university lecturers and express them as a proportion of total expenditure in universities each year since 1978–79.

Mr. Brooke

The cost of salaries of clinical and non-clinical academic staff paid from general university expenditure (that is all recurrent expenditure excluding research grants and contracts and expenditure on other services rendered to outside bodies) is as follows:

Academic year Salaries of clinical and non-clinical academic staff Percentage of general expenditure
£ million
1978–79 325 37.1
1979–80 402 38.1
1980–81 512 39.0
1981–82 537 37.8
1982–83 549 35.8

During this period the scope of general expenditure increased, primarily to include a higher proportion of capital provision, the funding of student unions and additional provision for redundancy and early retirement compensation.
