HC Deb 26 February 1985 vol 74 cc148-9W
Mrs. Dunwoody

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer what has been the value added tax on a gallon of (a) petrol and (b) diesel in each of the last 10 years; and what has been the total revenue from each source in each of those years.

Mr. Hayhoe

[pursuant to his reply, 25 February 1985, c. 57]: The information is as follows:

Amount of VAT per gallon (pence) Total VAT revenue from road fuel
Petrol Derv £ million
1974–75 15 11 140
1975–76 15 12 430
1976–77 9 9 325
1977–78 8 9 290
1978–79 9 9 280
1979–80 16 16 420
1980–81 17 18 575
1981–82 21 21 720
1982–83 22 22 800
1983–84 24 22 875

The amount of VAT on a gallon of petrol and derv has been calculated at the rate and (typical) prices current in January each year. The total VAT revenue has been calculated from estimates of consumers' expenditure on road fuel, and takes account of relevant VAT rate changes. Expenditure on derv is included but is not available as a separate estimate.
