§ 30. Mr. William Powellasked the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs what estimates his Department has made of the total number of refugees who have fled from Afghanistan as a result of the Soviet invasion of that country.
§ Mr. RentonThere are now up to 3 million Afghan refugees in Pakistan, and up to another 1 million in Iran. Those in Pakistan constitute the world's largest single concentration of refugees. Over one fifth of the population of Afghanistan have now fled that country. This is tragic testimony to the immense suffering inflicted by the Soviet invasion and a clear demonstration that the Afghan people reject the Karmal regime.
