asked the Secretary of State for Social Services why a revision of the policy in relation to drug prescribing was not identified as a policy task in the document, "The Function, Staffing and Management of the DHSS", issued in August 1984.

The policy tasks referred to in the document were intended to be an illustrative selection. As the document points out, we have been undertaking a comprehensive re-examination of the programmes for which ny right hon. Friend is responsible. General medical practitioners' prescribing is shown as one of the main responsibilities of the divisions concerned in their management accounts for the current period, copies of which were placed in the Library in July 1984
