HC Deb 11 December 1985 vol 88 c636W
Mr. Best

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs if he will make a statement about the current capacity and state of the art of seismographic verification in nuclear arms control.

Mr. Eggar

In our view there are many questions, of both a theoretical and a practical nature, which must be resolved before an adequate verification regime could be established. These difficulties were outlined by my hon. Friend the Member for Shoreham (Mr. Luce) in the speech that he made in the House during the Adjournment debate on 7 June at column 617–024. We follow closely developments in seismology to see what contribution, if any, we can make to the resolution of these outstanding difficulties.
