asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer if he will publish a table to indicate by how much thresholds could be raised on a revenue-neutral basis if a new band of income tax were introduced at 35 per cent. on taxable incomes of (a) £6,000, (b) £8,000 and (c) 10,000.

By about 8 per cent., 5 per cent. and 3 per cent. respectively in 1986–87 over and above the indexation of allowances and thresholds illustrated in the Autumn Statement 1985. These estimates assume that the Advocate on 14 November inviting comments on the report from a number of bodies and individuals who were thought to have an interest in the proposed reforms.
