Mr. Dobson

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services (1) why the number of administrative staff in the National Health Service increased by 10,000 between September 1978 and September 1984;

(2) why the number of ancillary staff in the National Health Service decreased by 20,000 between September 1978 and September 1984;

(3) why the number of technical and professional staff in the National Health Service increased by 20,000 between September 1978 and September 1984.

The changes in the staff groups referred to are as follows:

professional and technical staff); improved productivity following the introduction of incentive bonus schemes for ancillary staff; the impact of the Government's initiative on cost improvement, including competitive tendering; and the transfer of 2,700 operating department assistants from the ancillary staffs Whitley Council to the professional and technical '13' Whitley Council from 1 April 1984.
