HC Deb 10 December 1985 vol 88 c606W
72. Mr. Conway

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services what progress is being made by the regions in advising their plans for the disposal of unnecessary buildings or unused land belonging to the National Health Service.

Mr. Whitney

The disposal of surplus National Health Service land and property is an ongoing task and health authorities do not routinely submit plans or forecasts of future disposals. As at 31 March 1985 some 4,900 acres had been declared surplus to National Health Service requirements and were in process of disposal. In the year ending 31 March 1985 approximately 1,000 acres were disposed of resulting in proceeds of approximately £49 million all of which was retained by health authorities for re-investment in the service.

75. Mr. Chapman

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services what plans he has for the resources realised from the sale of surplus land belonging to the Health Service.

Mr. Whitney

Health authorities have been advised that, in general, they will retain the proceeds of their disposals for funding future health service developments.
