HC Deb 04 December 1985 vol 88 cc274-5W
Mr. Tim Smith

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services what measures he has taken to seek to encourage United States pharmaceutical investment in the United Kingdom.

Mr. Hayhoe

The promotion of inward investment is primarily the responsibility of my right hon. and learned Friend the Secretary of State for Trade and Industry. So far as my Department is concerned, the pharmaceutical price regulation scheme is intended not only to provide that medicines are available to the National Health Service at reasonable prices but also to encourage the growth of a successful, research-based pharmaceutical industry in the United Kingdom. In negotiating the renewal of the scheme with the Association of the British Pharmaceutical Industry, we shall seek to maintain the attractiveness of this country for pharmaceutical investment by British, American and other companies.
