Mr. Corbyn

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science what plans he has to increase the number of occupational therapy places in educational institutions.

Sir Keith Joseph

The figure of £40 million was fixed following careful consideration of the likely range of costs of employing sufficient supervisory staff necessary to secure the reliable and adequate supervision of pupils at midday. Account was taken of the number of supervisors who might be required in schools of different sizes having regard to the substantial number of people already employed by local education authorities to assist with midday supervision.

Mr. Freud

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science whether he will list in the Official Report those organisations consulted by his Department on the question of the cost of lunchtime supervision.

Sir Keith Joseph

The Government's new initiative for providing adequate and reliable supervision of pupils at midday has been the subject of detailed discussion between the Department and the Association of County Councils and the Association of Metropolitan Authorities.
