Mr. Foulkes

asked the Prime Minister if she will list all expenditure concerning the Falkland Islands and the United Kingdom military commitment to the islands which is not met by the Ministry of Defence.

Expenditure in the Falkland Islands not met by the Ministry of Defence, excluding expenditure by the Falkland Islands Government met from their own revenues, falls under the following headings

  1. (a) Rehabilitation: A rehabilitation grant of £15 million was announced in December 1982;
  2. (b) Development: A development grant of £31 million was announced in December 1982;
  3. (c) War damage compensation: Payments under the war damage compensation scheme, which was announced in July 1982, have to date totalled £3,244,000;
  4. (d) Diplomatic Service personnel: The recurring cost of Diplomatic Service personnel in Port Stanley amounted to £171,530 in the financial year 1984–85.

Expenditure under all these headings is a charge to the Foreign and Commonwealth Office budget.
