HC Deb 17 April 1985 vol 77 cc187-8W
17. Mr. MacKenzie

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland what estimate he has made of the number of jobs likely to be created in Scotland as a result of the measures announced by the Chancellor of the Exchequer in his recent Budget speech.

Mr. Younger

The continued recovery in the Scottish economy reflects the success of the Government's economic strategy. Within that framework the measures announced my my right hon. Friend for changes in the structure of national insurance contributions, tax reductions and the expansion of employment and training should be particularly helpful in establishing new jobs.

33. Mr. Gourlay

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland what estimates he has made of the consequences on job and industrial investment prospects in Scotland of the recent Budget proposals.

Mr. Younger

The Budget will help to create the conditions for faster economic growth, and this will lead to new jobs and investment. In particular new jobs are expected to result from the restructuring of national insurance contributions and from tax reductions. The expansion, in employment and training measures will provide opportunities for the young and the long term unemployed.
