HL Deb 03 April 1985 vol 462 cc337-8WA
The Countess of Mar

asked Her Majesty's Government:

Whether dispensing doctors will beat the responsibility for any clinical mishaps due to the quality of any generic drug whose manfufacturer cannot be traced.

The Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State, Department of Health and Social Security (Baroness Trumpington)

For any medicinal product, including a generic product, to be marketed in the United Kingdom, the licensing authority has to be satisfied that the product is safe, efficacious and of good quality under the Medicines Act 1968. Dispensing doctors and pharmacists are responsible for ensuring that the drugs they dispense have so satisfied the licensing authority.
