HC Deb 31 October 1984 vol 65 cc1000-2W
Mr. Fisher

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science what representations he has received from (a) outside bodies, (b) schools, colleges and universities and (c) individuals on the subject of the proposals for the training of teachers for the deaf and blind.

Mr. Freud

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science if he will list in the Official Report those organisations and individuals who responded to the report of the advisory committee on the supply and education of teachers, teacher training and special educational needs, and how many of these opposed the proposal to end the mandatory requirement for teachers of (a) the deaf, (b) partially-hearing and (c) the blind to hold a specialist qualification.

Mr. Dunn

[pursuant to his reply, 23 October 1984, c. 532]: By 26 October the following responses had been received from the organisations consulted formally by my right hon. Friends the Secretary of State and the Secretary of State for Wales (List A) and from 51 other organisations (List B). Additional responses have been received from around 900 individuals. Only rarely was a distinction made between teachers of the hearing impaired and teachers of the blind; it appears that a significant majority of respondents opposed the removal of the mandatory requirements.
