§ Mr. Willie W. Hamiltonasked the Secretary of State for Scotland what recent estimates have been made of the capital needed to bring up to satisfactory physical standards the stock of psychiatric hospital buildings; and what expenditure is proposed for each of the next three years.
§ Mr. John MacKayA survey of hospital buildings in 1981 suggested that some £200 million over 10–15 years would be required to bring the stock up to standard; of this some £34 million relates to psychiatric hospitals.
Following the survey my Department allocated an additional £9.4 million in 1983–84 and £18.4 million (provisional) in the current financial year according to Boards' assessment of immediate need. It is not possible to say, from the information available to my Department, what proportion of these funds has been spent on psychiatric hospitals. Future allocations will be made in the light of bids by Boards and the availability of funds.
