HC Deb 31 October 1984 vol 65 c979W
Mr. Maples

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department if he will make a statement about Metropolitan police manpower for 1985–86.

Mr. Brittan

I have told the Commissioner of Police of the Metropolis that the Metropolitan police will be allowed an additional 50 police and 132 civilian posts next year, bringing the police establishment to 27,165 and the civil staff ceiling to 13,882. With this further allocation, the police establishment will have increased by 576 and the civil staff ceiling by 832 since 1982. Police and civil staff strengths on 31 August 1984 were 26,798 and 13,244 respectively.
