HC Deb 31 October 1984 vol 65 cc1086-7W
Mr. Parry

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services if he will list the numbers of persons employed by the Liverpool area health authority in each of the past three years to the latest available date.

Mr. Kenneth Clarke

The latest figures available centrally for all staff groups at area/district level relate to September 1982. They are shown as follows.

Year by year comparisons are difficult as the figures for 1982 exclude staff at Rainhill hospital transferred to St. Helens and Knowsley district on 1 April 1982. This largely accounts for the change in numbers between 1981 and 1982.

Medical and Non-Medical Directly-employed Staff Employed by Liverpool Area/District Health Authority at 30 September (whole-time equivalents)
1980 12,800
1981 13,100
1982 11,300

Notes:

(1) Medical and dental figures included in the above totals relate to permanent paid and honorary staff (whole-time and part-time). They exclude locum staff, hopital practitioners, clinical assistants, occasional sessional staff, and GPs participating in hospital staff funds.

(2) After NHS re-structuring in 1982, senior registrars became employees of the regional health authority. Their re-distribution within regions is not known centrally. Therefore, 1982 figures shown above will not include such staff.
