HC Deb 31 October 1984 vol 65 cc971-2W
Mr. Fisher

asked the Prime Minister whether she will list the dates on which Her Majesty's Government have sent supplies to Ethiopia in the last 12 months.

The Prime Minister

Under bilateral arrangements, Her Majesty's Government sent supplies to Ethiopia in May 1984 and October 1984. Her Majesty's Government also contributed to supplies sent by the European Community in July 1984 and October 1984.

Mr. Fisher

asked the Prime Minister whether she will list the supplies of (a) food, (b) medicine and (c) other materials that Her Majesty's Government have sent to Ethiopia in the last 12 months, both in terms of volume and cash.

The Prime Minister

In May 1984 Her Majesty's Government sent to Ethiopia food and medicine, and paid for the transport of grain through four British voluntary agencies, at a total cost of £300,000. In October 1984 the Government paid shipping costs of £70,000 for grain and other supplies. No breakdown in terms of volume is yet available.

Under European Community arrangements the Government have contributed to supplies sent to Ethiopia in July 1984, valued at £4.2 million, and in October 1984 valued at £2 million, under their emergency allocation. In October 1984 a further £5.6 million was provided under the "Food for Work" scheme.

Mr. Fisher

asked the Prime Minister when the Ethiopian Government first requested aid from Her Majesty's Government.

The Prime Minister

The Ethiopian Government requested aid for the current drought from Her Majesty's Government and other Governments in 1983. Since then British aid to Ethiopia has been worth more than £13 million, including our share of European Community support.
