HC Deb 30 October 1984 vol 65 cc926-7W
Mr. Caborn

asked the Secretary of State for Defence how much of the land owned by his Department at the Molesworth air base will be required for its proposed expansion; and what will happen to the remainder of the land.

Mr. Lee

Planning for the development of RAF Molesworth is still under way and detailed requirements for land at the site have yet to be finalised.

Mr. Caborn

asked the Secretary of State for Defence when it is anticipated that construction at the Molesworth air base will begin; and when the first missiles are expected to be deployed there.

Mr. Lee

It is planned that cruise missiles will be deployed to RAF Molesworth in about 1988; to this end, major construction work at the site will begin in late 1985.

Mr. Caborn

asked the Secretary of State for Defence what plans he has to fence off Ministry of Defence land at Molesworth air base to impede access by demonstrators.

Mr. Lee

Our plans for the development of RAF Molesworth as a base for ground-launched cruise missiles include the construction of a perimeter fence.

Mr. Caborn

asked the Secretary of State for Defence what plans he has to increase security personnel at Molesworth air base.

Mr. Lee

Detailed plans for the development of RAF Molesworth have yet to be finalised, but Her Majesty's Government will ensure that adequate numbers of security personnel are made available to guard the facility.

Mr. Caborn

asked the Secretary of State for Defence whether he plans any further action to restrict demonstrators' access to Molesworth air base.

Mr. Lee

Plans for the development of RAF Molesworth as a base for ground-launched cruise missiles include the provision of fencing and sufficient numbers of security personnel to guard the site. Detailed security requirements will be examined as planning continues.

Mr. Caborn

asked the Secretary of State for Defence whether any improvements are planned to the proposed sewerage and drain systems at Molesworth air base to alleviate the risk of flooding.

Mr. Lee

As part of the planning for the development of RAF Molesworth as a base for ground-launched cruise missiles, arrangements have been made to consult local authorities and other agencies about the provision of utilities and services at the site.
